Tidal Tongues is a performance and workshop by Sarah Blissett (UK) and Maj Horn (DK) made site-specific for the Getterön nature reserve in Varberg (August 2025).

Along the shoreline, we explore seaweed stories as ways to rethink our connection to these vital marine life forms. The project highlights the important role that seaweeds play in the ocean ecosystem during this time of climate crisis, while also taking participants on a creative journey into underwater worlds through poetic reflections and performative rituals.

Tidal Tongues begins with a procession and performance lecture by Blissett and Horn about the connections between humans and seaweeds, and the many species that rely on them for food and shelter. This is followed by a participatory workshop in which participants are invited to think, explore and create together. Finally, we cook together using Egg Wrack, Sugar Kelp and Bladderwrack, and enjoy a communal seaweed feast.

This work was commissioned by Art Inside Out and Varbergs Konsthall in connection with the exhibition ‘Seaweed Stories’.
